The turning point for Baird — though he played it down at the time — was almost certainly a Newspoll in the last week of September that showed a disastrous slide in his satisfaction ratings among voters, and a serious slip in the Baird-led Coalition’s two-party-preferred lead over Labor.Miscalculations do not come much bigger for political leaders who base their authority on looking after voters' best interests and sticking with decisions.
